General Discretionary Guidelines

Discretionary funds

Your offer letter will indicate the amount of discretionary funds you have each year. These funds carry forward to the next year, but you must spend all of it by your fellowship end date.

Equipment

Equipment such as computers and large items cannot be purchased in a researcher's final year at the Institute. The department occasionally makes exceptions, but prior approval should be sought from the DAF, Matthew Cubstead.

MIT Funds

As these are MIT monies, all purchases made with these funds must comply with MIT's regulations for research-related purchases made with untaxed research funds. In particular, please note that any equipment purchased with MIT funds belongs to MIT, and must be exclusively for the direct support of your MIT research, such as writing papers or running lab data.

For example, purchasing a laptop for your research when you first arrive at MIT is approved. However, buying a desktop computer or printer for your partner or child is not approved.
